Mat & Kat's big bike trip
Day 12 Beziers
Kat: After a lovely day in Perpignan, we hit the road again for a beautiful 40km ride to Leucate first along rivers and then along the coast. Almost entirely traffic free bike lanes along the coast with stunning views across the water, it was bliss.
At Lecaute we hopped on a train for one stop to avoid a poorly maintained section of the bike path, and then rode another 20km to Narbonne. Despite the train being recommended for this stretch, we still had to carry our bikes over the footbridge at both stations. This was possibly the most gorgeous section of the trip so far, a tree-line, traffic-free canal path, with the sea off to the other side. The unsealed tow path was rough in parts and we and the bikes were covered in dust.
There were a couple of animal incidents: on the canal tow path a viperine snake slithered across our path, and on a remote country road 3 guard dogs chased us, biting at our shoes.
We arrived in Narbonne for lunch, then rode on to the beautiful city of Beziers. It was 95km in total, our longest day yet, but we're feeling good!
