Mat & Kat's big bike trip
Day 39 Labin
Well Pula was lovely, but we're not expecting anything like that tonight. The only thing Labin has going for it is that it's halfway to Rijeka. Today's ride is 50km of gentle uphill, then 2km very steep down and and a hard 5km climb to Labin. It always seems like such a waste of up to go down so fast!
We stopped for coffee and snacks in a tiny village called Valtura, with a bench outside the only store, and the oldest, dirtiest cat I've seen in a long time.
Lunch was next to a WWII war memorial (there are a lot of them around), then a long downhill to a river valley, and a long, hot slog back up to the top of the hill. Our host met us at the gate with a welcome glass of ice tea.
Turns out Labin has an old part with amazing views down to the coast. And it used to have a coal mine until 1989. We are sitting in the garden enjoying the bottle of Chianti our host gave us. Life is pretty good.
